Audience research

Audience Research

For audience research into making a music video, I looked at what fans of our chosen artist also look at both on Amazon and Spotify.

On Amazon, I searched the album that our chosen song appears on Love And Death - Between Here And Lost. At the bottom of the page, there is a section all about other related bands who's merchandise have either been purchased along with this album, or are albums and singles by artists that are of the same genre....

Here are 7 other albums bought by customers on Amazon;
  •  KoЯn - The Paradigm Shift
  • Machine Head - Bloodstone And Diamonds
  • Slipknot - The Grey Chapter
  • Fear And The Nervous System Album
  • Mushroomhead - The Righteous & The Butterfly
  • Scar The Martyr Album
  • Killer Be Killed Album

I also looked on Spotify to find related and most popular artists that are linked in with Love And Death...

Here are 8 of the related artists to love and death;

  • Brian "Head" Welch
  • Demon Hunter
  • Project 86
  • The Showdown
  • War Of Ages
  • Blindside
  • Haste The Day
  • We As Human

To conclude my audience research, I have made a survey asking our potential audience questions to help with coming up with ideas and give me and my group a bit of an understanding of what the people would like to see.

Please Click This Link Below!

This link takes you straight to the survey, please answer truthfully so we can
get a better result and understanding.

Anamatic

This version of our storyboard is the animatic version. This features the images from our storyboard in video format (with music) so that it plays out like a hand drawn frame by frame music video. The animatic helps with planning because it helps us to understand features like the duration of shots and what shots look best at different moments.

Animatic (working progress)

First we print screened each box for the storyboards and saved them to Desktop.  Then we put them into Final Cut Pro by clicking on File, Import, Files, Desktop and then clicking on each image of the storyboards that we print screened.

We then placed each storyboard box in a line (in order of how we want the video to be)

We than places the song into the animatic. We already had the song (originally from Itunes) saved onto Desktop. So all we had to do was click  File, Import, Files, Desktop and then click on the song.

Costume and colour pallets (part of treatment)

What Love and Death wears in their music video:

Usually, Love and Death wear dark and slightly morbid costumes to try and fit the dark themes of the videos.
Below are 2 examples of the bassists usual attire:

Costume ideas for the group:

For our music video, we will most likely wear our everyday clothes which are usually dark, therefore fitting for the song and genre.
Another reason why we are wearing our normal clothes is because we will be filming in college and we want the story of the video to be based on a stressful college day.

We will be using a similar colour pallet found in most hard rock/metal music videos. The video will be filmed in the day light but we will desaturate the colours to dye down the colours for a more moody effect.

Here are some examples of this de-saturated colour pallet taken from other bands music videos:

1. Beartooth-The Lines

2. Thousand Foot Krutch-Favorite Disease

3. P.O.D-Murdered Love

asking the band (Love and Death) for permission to use their song

Before any filming can take place, we had to ask the artist/record label for permission to use their song.
So me and Luke decided to e-mail the bands record label asking for permission.
We did this by going on to Love and Deaths official website and then following their link to their record label.

Group Roles (part of treatment)

Luke Williams Powell: Drums and acting

Kieran Roberts: Guitar and acting

Josh Zeiler: Vocalist and acting

Keavey Henshaw: Bassist and acting

The location we have chosen to film in is Thomas Adams School Wem and maybe some different streets and locations in Wem.
The reason why we have chosen to film in these locations is because they link with the problems that each member will be acting about. For example, dropping folders in school, getting shouted at by a teacher etc.

Love and Death, Meltdown lyric analysis

I think I’m having a meltdown

I feel the tension
(I feel the tension)
Confessions told
(Tell me, tell me everything)
Insanity is taking over
The fantasies are driving me mad

Before
Never let go
Before I fold
Before
Never let go
Before I fold

You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Controlling me losing it all
You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Just take away the tears
I’m suffocating, don’t leave me here waiting

The cry within
(Cry within)
The flesh is bold
(Tell me, tell me everything)
Calamity is waiting silent
The razor is cutting the pain and letting it out

Before
Never let go
Before I fold
Before
Never let go
Before I fold

You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Controlling me losing it all
You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Just take away the tears
I’m suffocating, don’t leave me here waiting

Over and over in my head
I see your scars
Remember the day when we first met
Take me back

Before
Never let go
Before I fold
Before
Never let go
Before I fold

You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Controlling me losing it all
You know that I am heading for a meltdown
Just take away the tears
I’m suffocating, don’t leave me here waiting

Meltdown
For a meltdown
Meltdown

Like the name suggests, this song is literally about having a meltdown (loosing your temper).
This is shown throughout the lyrics. For example, "I think I'm having a meltdown" and "I feel the tension" clearly express the anger and pain that the singer is singing about.

The semantic field of anger has given me many ideas for my music video.
One of my ideas is to have each group member have small things that annoy them and gradually make them more angry. For example, one member could be walking across the field and his folder could suddenly blow away in the wind. This would result in him slowly getting closer to having his own meltdown.

Our chosen song

The song we have chosen is Meltdown, by Love and Death.
We have chosen this song because it features the use of heavy guitar playing and aggressive vocals.
Another reason why we have chosen this song is because it has given us many ideas for the video we plan on making. For example, the song is about loosing your temper, so we have thought about making a video based on the little things in life that everyone finds frustrating.

Songs I researched and considered

1: Open your eyes, Pillar

2: Broken, 12 Stones

3: Move, Thousand Foot Krutch

4: New drug, Thousand Foot Krutch

5: Release the panic, Red

Music Video Analysis (Video 3)

Video 3: Everything, Pillar. Unlike the other two songs, this music video features a more country theme to it. This is shown with the farming environment that it is set in (farms, tractors and stereotypical countryside clothes).
Like the other two bands, Pillar's genre is hard rock, but they appeared to change their style of sound to fit the whole country theme. They appeared of to adopted a southern rock/hard rock sound, with a touch of heavy guitar playing and even some screaming towards the end.
What I like about this video is how everything in the video moves at the same steady pace as the song. For example, the tractor slowly rolling by past the corn fields.

Mucis Video analysis (Video 2)

Video 2: Anthem of the Lonely, by Nine Lashes.
Just like TFK, Nine Lashes features the use of hard rock and alternative rock. They also come from TFK's previous record label, Tooth and Nail Records.
Unlike War of Change, the video for Anthem of the Lonely starts of with some dialog. which shows that there is a story involved. In this case, this video's story is very dark and gritty, which is apparent when we see Jeremy (lead vocalist) getting interrogated and tortured.
Throughout the rest of the video, the band seem to act almost insane due to their interrogation and torture.
Also, throughout the video, the band are all in matching uniform and moving (or head banging) at the same time. Because the band are constantly moving, the camera is always trying to keep up with their movements by doing close ups, pan shots and even shaking the camera at times.

Music video analysis (textual analysis) (Video 1)

Video 1: War of Change, Thousand Foot Krutch.
The bands genre is hard rock, which is clearly represented in this song and video.  For example, it features the heavy guitar riffs and aggressive drumming, along with a mixture of soft and growly vocals. A feature I like is how the camera slowly zooms towards a woman doing a strange pose. When Trevor (lead vocalist) starts singing, he starts to fade onto the camera while looking directly into it. This makes it look like he is actually staring into the viewers eyes. This includes many features, but the one I like the most is how the camera zooms up close to Trevor's face while he screams and holds a lightbulb to his face.
The lightbulb makes half his face look lighter than the other half, which could be representing the two sides of him in the war inside he is singing about.

Test video working progress (images)

These are some images of us working with different equipment.

We used a range of different techniques to make the practise video. We learnt about the filming environment and how to set up the equipment as a team. We included key lighting, which is important because it makes each person stand out and become more visible. We also managed to highlight the background of the scene by using back lighting. With these two effects put together, we were able to clearly see each person and the background when looking through the camera.

We got to experiment with a tripod and even with a track and dolly. This meant we were able to fully test out our skills, as well as learning new ones.

music video test (draft)

This is the practice music video that we made after experimenting with all of the equipment.
